Below are photos and brief descriptions of a few out of the many jobs we completed on a Bayfield 32 near Jacksonville, Florida in 2004. The new owners, who were new to cruising, wanted some additional equipment and modifications to make the boat better suited to a planned cruise through the Bahamas.


We added this 55 watt solar panel to the pushpit rail using a fully adjustable bracket of our own design.


This panel can be swiveled into any position to increase output or to swing out of the way to use the boarding ladder.



Installing 2nd deck chainpipe and preparing teak windlass mounting pad.


Original chainpipe forward was moved aft and old hole covered with a teak block. Two chainpipe fittings direct two anchor rodes into the divided chain locker.

The Bayfield 32 is a lot of boat to handle without an anchor windlass as seen in photo at upper left. The Lofrans Royal manual windlass is independent of the boats electrical system. A hinged and gasketed chain locker door below was added to stop muddy water from splashing on the forward bunk.


The original cabin sole had a slippery slope opposite the head. Here we begin to raise the sole by epoxying oak strips and teak trim in place.


Next, 1/2-inch plywood was glued and screwed to wood framing.


Lastly, we epoxied 1/4-inch thick teak and oak strips on top of the plywood, using a plastic sheet with another piece of plywood and bucket of water on top to hold the strips down while curing and then sanded smooth and oiled.


Now instead of sliding down the angled sole you can step up onto a level surface when going forward. While we lived aboard this boat it was a much appreciated improvement.
