1965 Pearson Triton 28 Sailboat (fixer-upper)

Price: Free to a good home

Location: Savannah, GA

The Boat: 1965 fiberglass Pearson Triton. LOA: 28’6” Beam: 8’3” Draft: 4’ Displacement: about 8,000 lbs. Ballast: 3,300 lbs lead. Carl Alberg design built by Pearson in Bristol, RI. Long keel with cutaway forefoot and keel hung wood rudder. Fractional rig. V-berth forward, clothes locker and head amidships and two full bunks in salon with galley aft. 6’ standing headroom in salon. Previous owner removed built-in ice box and modified the galley cabinetry. Aluminum spars and stainless rigging. Boat was sailed offshore from FL to near Savannah, GA four years ago and has since been neglected on a mooring. A classic design with great potential but presently it’s quite a mess and in need of repairs. Hull number unknown.

Inventory: Atomic 4 gas inboard engine in unknown condition, though it did run last time boat was used in 2009, mainsail with two reef points in fair condition, hank-on genoa and working jib in fair condition, two old style winches on mast and two newer ones in cockpit, most of running rigging is there but old, boom vang, main sheet on end-boom traveler, danforth-type anchor with rode and chain, bulkhead mount compass, new tiller (ready to install – patched up broken one is still installed and apparently usable), possibly original seacocks (not leaking but in unknown condition), bow pulpit (bent), stern rail and lifelines, deck chain pipe, toilet (may need repair) with flexible holding tank, bunk cushions, DC and AC wiring with built-in battery charger (untested), 12v battery, cabin lights, depth sounder and navigation lights present but untested, electric bilge pump, companionway drop boards with lock, portable cooler, some mooring lines and fenders, brass bell, two fire extinguishers, assorted spare parts.

Repairs Needed: Balsa deck core appears mostly intact except for soft spots along side decks. One forward opening port light is missing (either needs a replacement or remove the other one and bolt on Plexiglas over outside). Engine will need to be checked over, oil changed and old gas purged. It may be leaking oil. Toilet may need a rebuild kit for the pump. Bow pulpit bent. When in storage on her mooring last year the plugged cockpit drains caused rainwater to fill inside to a few inches above the cabin sole so it may have some rot in the wood. It hasn’t fallen apart yet though. Interior is rough - needs good cleaning, some repairs and new paint inside and out. Bottom needs cleaning and new paint. Rudder should be inspected. Needs debris-clogged cockpit drains cleaned. Sail cover is old and should be replaced or at least some seams re-stitched.

Notes: If you addressed some of the above issues the boat could be sailed away or there is an inexpensive boat lift on the river nearby if you have a trailer available. Beam of boat is road legal 8’3” and a trailer may be available to rent or buy. Georgia state registration (expired 2011). If inboard engine is not wanted, it could be sold and an outboard motor on bracket installed on transom for propulsion. Or an outboard well could be installed in the lazarette locker instead.

Optional extras available: Trailer to rent or buy, hard dinghy with oars, used transom bracket and 2003 6 hp 4-stroke outboard with spare hi-thrust prop.
